Adventure: Turtle Head

Turtlehead Peak Trail is an 8km (5 mile) round trip hike in Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area. This steep, well-travelled trail is one of the most difficult day hikes in Red Rock Canyon. The climb can be quite strenuous, but the beautiful view from the peak is well worth it. Intermediate level scrambling and loose rocks along the trail add to the difficulty of this hike. Red Rock Canyon is just a short drive from Las Vegas and this hike is a great option for those wanting to get away from Sin City for a day of adventure.

Summary: Turtlehead Peak Trail starts at the Sandstone Quarry parking lot. The trail heads north from the parking lot to a signed fork in the road. From the fork the Turtlehead Peak Trail heads north towards Turtlehead Mountain. The trail then climbs in elevation up the side of the mountain and eventually approaches the summit from the north. The peak offers an incredible panoramic view of the entire Red Rock Canyon Conservation Area.

Adventure: Turtle Head

The trail is well signed. After about 2km (1.3 miles) there will be a fork in the trail splitting the Calico Tanks Trail from Turtlehead Peak (Route marker #2 on the map). Stay left and follow the Turtlehead Peak Trail north.

As you gain elevationthe trail becomes less defined. Although the final destination at the top of Turtlehead Mountain is always within sight, there are various trails of different difficulties to reach the peak. Periodic blue paint markers will help guide you along the easiest and most well defined route to the peak. The blue markings begin once the trail starts to gain elevation (Route marker #3 on the map) and you follow them for the remainder of the hike.

From the entrance of the cave, walk left, jump off the ledge, and head down the stairs. Walk to the left and use the hookshot to get across the large gap in the room. Continue left and then exit the cave.

There is a moveable block in this room and once you start moving it, you can control it using the control-pad. Push it to the left four blocks, then up two, left one, and down five so that it covers all the tiles in the room. If done successfully a treasure chest will appear in this room containing 20 rupees! Collect the rupees from the treasure chest then head down a screen.

There are two sparks in this room and you can defeat each of them by using the boomerang. Open the treasure chest in this room to get some more rupees and then head left a screen. Here you will find Rolling Bones, the mini-boss from all the way back in Tail Cave. Just jump over the rolling spiked log and hit him once with the boomerang to defeat him. Once Rolling Bones is defeated, head up a screen.

Once you resurface you will be in a room with four ropes. Use the power bracelet to lift up the pots and defeat the ropes in this room. Open up the treasure chest to get the Stone Beak and then head up a screen.

From here, again head up a screen and then right. We want to push the moving block, but this time we want to push so that it lands right between the two blocks at the top of the room. You can push the moving platform up once, right twice, and up three times. Follow the path and then push the block on the right to the right, causing it to fall into the lava. Continue up a screen.

There are two ropes and a peahat in this darkened room. Defeat the ropes as they can be annoying and then use some magic powder on the two torches in this room. Doing so will light up the room and allow you to see a crack in the wall on the left side of the room, as well as one on the bottom of the room. The one at the bottom serves as a shortcut to an earlier segment of the dungeon. Place a bomb to blow them open and then head left a screen.

There is a treasure chest in this room with a number of blocks. Push the block to the left of the treasure chest up one, and then push the adjacent block to the left. Open up the treasure chest to get a small key. After you get the small key, head back right a screen and then up a screen.

From the entrance of the dungeon, head up and right to get back to the room with the moving platform. Push the moving platform up once and then all the way to the right, allowing you to head right. In this next area, if you bombed the wall earlier, you should be able to continue to the right another screen. If not, bomb the crack in the wall and head right a screen.

From this room yet again, once more head up and right to reach the moving platform. Push it up once, right twice, and up five times once again so it lands right between those two blocks. Push the block to the right and head up a screen once again. Continue to the right a screen and then up through the one-way door.

Afterwards, collect the fairy that is left behind and then head up a screen. Climb the steps and the blocks should be lowered if you hit the crystal switch earlier as stated in the walkthrough. Open the treasure chest to get the dungeon item, the Magic Rod.

Next, jump off the ledge and head back down the steps. Go through the side-scrolling sequence just as before and resurface in the darkened room. Jump off the ledge and head left three screens and then down a screen.

Climb down the steps and use the magic rod to melt the bottom row of ice. Then walk just below the second column from the right of ice. There should be three blocks directly above you. Use the magic rod to melt this ice. Climb the steps and you should now have a clear path to make it to the left side of the room. Jump over the ice and head down the steps to resurface at another part of the dungeon.

All the way to the west, he found an odd, fossilized-looking statue of what looked like a turtle. Innocently, Link decided it'd be a good idea to play the old bones the Frog's Song of Soul. Unfortunately for Link, the bones awoke... and it didn't seem happy to be there.

Link took on quickly - without the shell, he could cut it with his sword! He kept the same strategy, causing the turtle to accidentally slam into the wall, then striking quickly and repeatedly when it was stunned.

Backtrack to the cave where you got the Bird key. Instead of going in the cave, head up and to left. Use the hookshot to get across the broken bridge. Marin is trapped on the next bridge so use the hookshot right across from her to save her. After the owl talks to you, head west and find the hidden staircase under the bush.

Go in the cave and bomb the lower portion in order to find a Heart piece. Go down the cave road and use the hookshot to get across the gap and exit. Boulders will come falling down the mountain so avoid them while you are climbing the stairs. Go left and get the rupees in the chest and then drop down. Use a bomb to open the cave entrance. Once you go in, equip the mirror shield since a huge flamethrower will be spitting fire at you so block it with your shield. Go up the stairs and keep heading left. When you reach the end of the path, you'll see a giant stone turtle head you need to remove. Play the frog song on the Ocarina to make the turtle come back to life. The turtle will start attacking you and so keep attacking its head and neck and soon it will be destroyed and the Turtle Rock entrance will be cleared.

The hike to the top of Turtlehead Peak is not an easy feat. The trial is quite strenuous; it gains about 2,000 feet in 2 miles, it has spots with unsure footing, extreme exposure to the sun, and includes some trail finding. It is highly recommended that hikers start this trail in the early morning hours (typically around 6 a.m.) to avoid being on the trail in the middle of the day. The extreme heat and dry environment of Red Rock National Recreation Area makes it very easy for hikers to get dehyrated, so be sure to bring plenty of water.

The trek up to the top of Turtlehead Peak is difficult, but one that hikers should greatly consider when visiting Red Rock National Recreation Area. Be mindful of your footing, water, and direction, and the trail will provide you with a phenomenal experience.

By the end of the last century, the state-endangered Blanding's turtle was already suffering from fragmented and shrinking wetland habitats, and new research was giving ecologists even more bad news. The local population was comprised mainly of adults with few juveniles or young adults: The turtles were dying off faster than they could be replaced.

After the eggs hatch, turtle hatchlings are numbered and given a medical checkup to determine their weight, length and general health. They are kept and reared for about a year, outfitted with a microchip for identification purposes and then released back to the preserves.

Our partnerships allow us to expand and improve the head-start program, a collaborative effort that has a much greater chance for success and impact than would our single agency tackling species' recovery on its own.

Despite being an animal Stand user, Coco Jumbo doesn't display any kind of personality or heightened intelligence whatsoever. He seems to, like all turtles, prefer to hide in small, dark places. Even with a conflict going on, Coco Jumbo remains indifferent to the situation, and simply keeps idling. By the end of Vento Aureo, Coco Jumbo's body became permanently affixed to Polnareff's soul, gaining his personality and allowing him to speak to humans. 2ff7e9595c
